The Cuban Journalists Association (UPEC), its Humorists
and Cartoonists Section, and the San Antonio de los Banos Museum of
Humor wish to announce the Cuba 2007 Fifteenth International Graphic
Humor Biennial. The event is scheduled to take place from March 25
to 29, sponsored by the Cultural Division of Havana Province and the
Latin American Journalists Federation (FELAP). The main venue will
be San Antonio de los Banos, with Havana city as alternate venue.
About the graphic humor contest:
Participation is open for all graphic humor professionals,
regardless of where they are based. The contest extends to the
following categories:
General humor
Political satire
Comic strip
Personal caricature
Humorous Photography
Works must be submitted in print, including those originally in
digital form.
Authors can send up to three works per category.
Works to be sent in may be produced using any technique, in formats
not exceeding 40 x 50 cm.
Authors must specify the following details for each work: names and
surnames (in addition to nom de plume); country; category in which
the work is competing; home address; and E-mail address.
All entries must be sent in before January 31,
2007. Works should be properly packed and addressed to:

About the jury:
A selection of the works sent in, put together by a specialized
admissions jury, will be exhibited at the 15th International Graphic
Humor Salon in San Antonio de los Banos.
The prizes for the different categories will be awarded by an
international jury, made up of prestigious graphic humor figures.
They are:
Adigio Benitez. Cuba 1924. Painter and illustrator. A graduate of
the San Alejandro Academy in 1949. Winner of the 2002 National
Visual Arts Prize. He has held numerous personal exhibitions and has
participated in more than 250 collective exhibitions in different
countries. As an artist, he is known for his blending of the search
for beauty inherent in every creator with a reflection of the issues
and circumstances of the social reality of his surroundings.
Jorge Oliver Medina. Cuba 1947. Cartoonist, illustrator, journalist
and lecturer in Social Communication. He has specialized in children
and youth subjects and has published several short story books and
plays for children. A producer of animated cartoons, he is currently
the head of the Graphic Humor Department at Havana’s “José Marti”
International Journalism Institute.
Massoud Shojai Tabatabai. Teheran, Iran, 1964. A graduate of
painting from the University of Teheran’s College of Fine Arts. He
is the editor-in-chief of the magazine Kayhan Caricature and chairs
the Teheran House of Humor. Recipient of numerous international
caricature awards. A member of the jury at the 2001 International
Graphic Humor Biennial.
Omar Figueroa Turcios. (Turcios). Colombia 1968. Outstanding
caricaturist who has received numerous prizes at international
events, among them at the San Antonio de los Banos International
Graphic Humor Biennial.
Guillermo Bastias (Guillo) Chile. Renowned Chilean caricaturist,
who during the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship worked for the militant
magazine APSI. Internationally awarded, he has published several
books of humor. A member of the jury at the 2004 International
Graphic Humor Biennial.
Armengol Tosa (Ermengol). Argentina. A published author since 1979,
he is currently the director of the Asociacion Cultural Humoralia,
in Lerida, Spain. He is the editor of the collection of the History
of Caricature in Ibero-America.
About the prizes:
Eduardo Abela Prize, consisting of a certificate and $1,000 CUC.
Prizes for first, second and third places in every category,
consisting of a certificate.
Other Cuban cultural institutions will also award prizes.
Meeting of Humorists
Workshops and lectures will be held between March 25 and 29 at both
San Antonio de los Banos and Havana, so that participants can
present their experiences, showcase their work (don’t leave your
portfolio behind) and reflect on the role of humor in the 21st
century.
The underlying idea is that of a meeting that fosters friendship,
solidarity and peace, among those who use their minds to make others
laugh and think.
Openings of graphic humor exhibitions will also be attended.
Program:
Sunday 25: Mural painting “Graphic Humorists for a World of Peace”
Monday 26: Opening of the Salon of the 15th Biennial and the
Veterans Salon.
Tuesday 27: Opening of the Women Caricaturist’s Exhibition.
Lecture: “Experiences of women as caricaturists and comic
strip makers.”
Colloquium: ”The evolution of graphic humor in
Cuba”
Wednesday 28: Workshop: “But it does move”, with artists from the
Cuban Film Institute animation studios. Personal exhibition by
Aristides Hernandez (Ares).Collective exhibition:”Ares invites”.
Personal exhibition by Adan Iglesias:”Impersonal caricature”
Thursday 29: The collective exhibition of the jury. Workshop on
political humor: “Laughing in peace”. All those taking part in the
workshop will be invited to create works on the subject, which will
be posted on the Internet by way of a Final Declaration denouncing
and rejecting war. Award ceremony and closure.
